The case caused a stir in June: In the Phoenix Center in Harburg, a 25-year-old was fatally injured with a knife by a man of the same age. The trial began on Thursday in the Hamburg regional court.
The defendant is accused of stabbing the victim eleven times with a knife in the food court of the Phoenix Center. Numerous witnesses – including families with children – had to witness the crime.

The motive should be clarified in the main hearing; the public prosecutor’s office assumes a private reason. The two men are said to have argued before the knife attack. They had been friends since 2015.
There are said to have been arguments between them beforehand, and a “violent protection order” was even imposed against the defendant the day before – meaning he should not have been near the victim.
Manslaughter charge – five years in prison
At this point in time there is no sufficient evidence of murder, which is why the defendant is charged with manslaughter. He faces at least five years in prison.
25-year-old announced statement
