Investigation Launched After Ship Explosion in Bluff

An inquiry is underway after an explosion on a ship berthed in Bluff, New Zealand, resulted in injuries to three crew members over the weekend. Two of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.
The incident occurred at approximately 3.15am on Saturday while the crew was performing maintenance on a boiler inside the ship’s engine room.
The Transport Accident investigation Commission (TAIC) has commenced an investigation into the event, wich took place on the Malta-registered bulk carrier MV Olivia at South Port. The investigation began on Monday.
“The reported circumstances were that three crew members onboard the MV Olivia were working on a boiler in the engine room,” according to the TAIC’s official statement.
“During this process, ther was an explosion or flashback, causing injury to the three crew members.”
The TAIC is treating this as a “serious marine casualty,” in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation’s Casualty Investigation Code.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene. St John reported sending one rapid response unit and two ambulances.
“Our crews assessed and treated three patients, one in a moderate condition and two in a serious condition who were transported to Southland Hospital,” said a St John spokesperson.
“During this process,there was an explosion or flashback,causing injury to the three crew members.”
Fire and Emergency NZ sent two crews from Bluff and Invercargill to the location.
“There was a small fire, but it was out before Fire and Emergency NZ attended,” a spokesperson confirmed.
