Sheinbaum & Trump: Gulf of Mexico Dispute – News

by Archynetys News Desk

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has made it clear that her country does not seek conflict with the United States, but rejected Donald Trump’s insistence on renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” During an event in Zacatecas, he stated: “We are a country of peace, this characterizes us. We want peace with the US government, not to argue, we are not interested in clashing at all.”

Sheinbaum added that the primary goal is to protect fellow Americans across the border. However, in response to the US president’s recent statements, he defended the geographical identity by asking the crowd: “What is it called? Gulf of the?”, getting in response a loud and unanimous “Mexico!”.

The dispute began last year, when a US decree ordered the official name in its territorial records to be changed. The decision prompted the Mexican government to sue Google for changing the wording on its digital maps.
