Maui Surfer Severely Injured in Shark Attack

Wailuku, Hawaii — A Maui surfer was recently attacked by a shark off Waiehu Beach Park on Friday morning, resulting in the severe injury of his right leg. Local authorities reported that the 61-year-old man, who was surfing, was bitten by a shark which completely severed his leg just below the knee.

Incident Details

The incident was reported to police who quickly arrived at the scene. The first responders immediately tried to control the bleeding with tourniquets before taking the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. Despite the severe injury, the surfer remained alert while being treated on shore.

Shark Attack Situation

Maui County closed Waiehu Beach Park following the attack. Officials have issued a public warning to stay out of the water in the incident area and a mile beyond, extending the warning until noon on Saturday and until further notice if there are additional shark sightings. Fire and ocean safety officials were patrolling the waters using rescue watercraft and a drone, while state officials provided shark warning signs and helped cordon off the area.

Revisiting Previous Incidents

This shark attack comes months after well-known surfer Tamayo Perry was killed in a shark attack near Oahu’s North Shore in June. The recent incident serves as a reminder to surfers and beachgoers to stay vigilant and heed warnings in water-activity areas.
