Getty Images/iStockphotoDetails are emerging of the attack on a young Swiss couple on Thursday during a morning swim in unsupervised waters off Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay, south of Port Macquarie, Australia.
Livia M., 25 years old, would have gone into the water before 6:30 a.m. in these waters known in the region to be home to sharks. She was filming a pod of dolphins with her GoPro when she was attacked by what the Daily Mail described as a bull shark. It tore off her arm and the Swiss woman’s fiancé, Lukas S. 26, rushed to try to chase away the 3 meter monster. He was unable to do so before the shark bit the unfortunate woman again and he himself suffered two bites to his legs.
A life-saving tourniquet
However, he was able to bring Livia back to the beach, 50 meters away. Witnesses rushed to help them. A woman called the emergency services and they were able to explain to her how to apply a tourniquet to Lukas’ wounds, which undoubtedly saved his life. Sadly, Livia died on the spot. He is hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
According to the newspaper, the couple was very sporty. Lukas ran the Sydney Marathon in 2 hours and 59 minutes in August. That month, he also earned his open water diving instructor certification. From 2016 to 2018, he was a gymnastics coach and became a lieutenant in the Swiss army in 2019. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Gallen where his partner also studied. He is enrolled at the University of Sydney.
She is a former synchronized swimmer and was hired at a financial consulting firm in 2024. The couple worked as security guards at the Davos Economic Forum.
This is the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year.
