The context:

Why are we talking about it? When they came out in 1996, nothing predestined the first Pokémon to become the biggest video game success of the year in Japan (with 1.6 million cartridges sold). After chaotic development within a little-known studio, Game Freak, this black and white game was released on a portable console at the end of its life, the Nintendo Game Boy. Regardless of whether the game is technologically behind the times, its concept of hunting and collecting adorable monsters quickly appeals. A game of playing and collecting cards invaded playgrounds a few months later. Then an animated series gives shimmering colors to this universe. From 1998, Pokémon was exported outside of Japan. Today, the series, which is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, has become the most lucrative in history, with 147 billion dollars in cumulative profits.
