The Shaolin Temple in China’s Henan Province continues to draw international attention, with notable figures seeking martial arts training and spiritual retreats. German metal singer Alea der Bescheidene recently completed an 18-day seclusion at the temple, while French basketball star Victor Wembanyama also reportedly underwent a 10-day program.
Alea der Bescheidene, lead singer of Saltatio Mortis, shared his transformative experience, stating, “Shaolin has become a part of my life. The martial arts and Zen practice have changed my life, indeed, I would even say they saved it.” He documented his journey on Instagram, noting the early morning routine, kung fu training, and immersion in Shaolin life. He also reflected on the brotherhood found in kung fu, saying, “you meet more than friends in the art of kung fu. You meet brothers and sisters. When we move in the same rhythm, nothing can stop us… Kung fu and the Zen ideology are more than just words. They are the flame in our hearts.”
Der Bescheidene also expressed gratitude for a personal conversation with Shi Yongxin, abbot of the temple, “in which I was able to thank him for helping me find my spiritual path in Shaolin and for allowing me to experience some of my moast profound moments.”
Victor Wembanyama’s Reported Retreat
“In Shaolin,every punch carries strength-and every laugh,brotherhood.”
In early June, Victor Wembanyama, a 21-year-old French basketball star for the San Antonio Spurs, reportedly shaved his head and began a 10-day seclusion and training program at the Shaolin Temple. The NBA‘s official account on Sina Weibo also posted the news. Dahe Daily reported that sources at the Temple confirmed Wembanyama’s presence but coudl not share further details.
According to CNN, Wembanyama, the 2024-25 NBA All-star and 2023-24 rookie of the Year, was seeking respite after a challenging season. “He had been out since Febuary following a rare deep vein thrombosis diagnosis and several weeks later the Spurs were officially eliminated from playoffs,” CNN reported.
