Shane Meadows Returns to Film After 17 Years With ‘Chork‘
Shane meadows, the acclaimed British director behind gritty dramas like This is England and Dead Man’s Shoes, has completed filming his first feature film in 17 years. the new project, titled Chork, is co-written with Jack Thorne, known for his work on Adolescence and collaborations with Meadows on the This is England TV series and The Virtues.Meadows, 52, expressed his excitement about returning to film. “To be returning to film after 17 years, writing alongside ‘megadude’ jack thorne again, and working with so many gifted collaborators, has been an absolute privilege,” he said in a statement.
Chork tells the story of Kit, 15, and Ani, 11, two young girls who run away from thier foster home in Kent. They embark on a journey up the east coast of England, hoping to find a better life in Scotland. Their disappearance triggers a national search, forcing Kit to rely on her wits to protect Ani and help them reach their destination.
Meadows added,”our story follows two beyond bright, funny as heck and mischievously ingenious young people on a ‘runaway’ road trip the length of this glorious isle. Safe to say, I’m beyond excited about what we’ve captured on their journey.”
The director also acknowledged the support of the film’s partners. “I’m also hugely grateful to our partners at BBC Film, BFI, Screen Yorkshire, Hoopsa Films and Altitude for their undying trust and support throughout.”
Eva Yates, director of BBC Film, highlighted Meadows’ significance in British cinema. “The films of Shane Meadows are at the heart of contemporary British independent cinema and we are hugely excited to support his return, with a cast of exceptional new actors, his brilliant writing collaborator jack Thorne, and an anarchic story of love, redemption and the untapped and profound potential of youth,” she said.
Louise Ortega, senior production and development executive at the BFI, described the film as “a typically funny, urgent and heartfelt state of the nation piece seen through the lens of two young girls making their way on a messy ride through Britain.”
Meadows’ previous fictional film was the 2009 comedy Leangk & Scor-zay. In 2013,he released the documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, which chronicled the band’s 2012 reunion. Chork* marks a significant return to fictional filmmaking for Meadows, whose work is known for its realism, strong characters, and exploration of social issues.
