Jeongdong Night Festival: Seoul’s Historic District Comes Alive with culture and Open Embassies

The UK and Canadian Embassies open their doors alongside numerous historical sites for a unique cultural experience in Jung-gu.


A Night of History and Culture in Jung-gu

Seoul’s Jung-gu district is set to host the ‘Jeongdong Night’ festival in may, offering a unique possibility to explore the area’s rich history and culture. This year,the festival boasts an unprecedented highlight: the opening of both the UK and Canadian Embassies to the public.

Beyond the embassies, over 35 historical and cultural facilities, including museums, religious sites, national heritage locations, art galleries, and performance halls, will extend their hours into the evening, welcoming visitors to experience Jeongdong in a new light.

Exclusive Access: Embassies Open Their Doors

The British Embassy, a landmark with a storied past, will be accessible to the public thru pre-arranged tours on May 23rd and 24th.This rare glimpse inside the embassy, usually off-limits, is expected to be a major draw for festival attendees.

Colin Crooks, the British Ambassador to Korea, highlighted the historical significance of the embassy grounds, noting that the site has served a similar purpose since the Joseon Dynasty. He also mentioned a tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in 1999, a testament to the enduring relationship between the UK and Korea.

Adding to the international flavor, the Canadian Embassy will also participate, offering tours and a lecture by Sean Morisay. this collaborative effort provides a unique opportunity to learn about the diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between Korea, the UK, and Canada.

A Festival of Experiences: From Performances to Lanterns

The ‘Jeongdong Night’ festival is structured around several themes, offering a diverse range of activities:

  • Yahwa (夜花): Historical and cultural performances that bring the past to life.
  • Yasa (夜史): Experiential programs along Jeongdong-gil, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the district’s history.
  • Yasol (夜設): Street performances that add a vibrant and contemporary flair to the festival.
  • Yaro (夜路): Guided historical commentary,providing deeper insights into Jeongdong’s significance.
  • Yagyeong (夜景): Night scenery, showcasing the beauty of Jeongdong under the stars.

Visitors can also enjoy a “Media Facade” at the Bae Jae-hak District museum, explore the Deoksugung Doldam-gil Photo Zone, wander through Cheongsa Lantern Street, and even participate in a lantern-making experience.

Community Involvement and Artistic Expression

The festival will also feature the contributions of 200 Jung-gu volunteer participants, known as ‘Nocturne’. Their involvement underscores the community’s commitment to celebrating its heritage.

Furthermore, over 500 artworks, showcasing personal stories in ‘Drawing Jeong-dong’, and messages of hope in ‘My shining Future’ displayed across 15 buildings, will be exhibited along Deoksugung Doldam Road, adding an artistic dimension to the event.

Vision for the Future

Kang Young-kyu, the general director of the festival, aims to highlight Jeongdong’s historical importance as a center for learning and progress during the Japanese colonial period. He believes that this legacy can inspire the youth of today.

The history and value of Jeongdong, which continued to pursue new studies, formed a network, and opened the future during the difficult and difficult Japanese colonial rule, will be the driving force for the current youth.
