Seattle Storm Acquires Veteran Guard Erica Wheeler

SEATTLE — The Seattle Storm today announced the signing of veteran guard Erica Wheeler. Under team policy, the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed.

A Veteran’s Journey in the WNBA

Wheeler, who recently played for the Indiana Fever over the past two seasons, has been a consistently productive player throughout her career. During her time with the Fever, she averaged 20.4 minutes per game, scoring 8.5 points, dishing out 3.4 assists, and shooting 40.4% from the field.

On June 7, 2024, Wheeler reached a significant milestone, scoring her 2,500th career point, which made her only the fourth undrafted player in WNBA history to achieve this feat. Her dedication and hard work are evident in her career numbers—297 regular-season games, 1,000 career assists (the second highest by an undrafted player alongside Becky Hammon), and countless invaluable assists and points.

Coach Quinn’s Praise

“Erica’s capacity to create plays and facilitate points is a huge add for our team,” said Storm Head Coach Noelle Quinn. “She brings a strong dedication to the game and is an incredible teammate. We’re looking forward to Erica joining us in Seattle.”

A Comprehensive NBA Career

Wheeler’s basketball journey began in 2015 when she signed with the Atlanta Dream, making her NBA debut in the same year. In 17 games, she averaged 11.9 minutes, 4.5 points per game, and shot 45.7% from the field. She also had a brief stint with the New York Liberty, playing three games.

From 2016 to 2019, Wheeler was integral to the Indiana Fever’s roster, playing in every regular-season game. Over those four seasons, she averaged 9.5 points, 4 assists, and shot 39.9% from the field. In 2017, she led the Fever in assists and ranked second in scoring, marking a peak in her individual performance.

Her resilience and skill were highlighted in 2019 when she became the first undrafted player to win WNBA All-Star MVP, a testament to her impact on the league. In the 2021 season, she played alongside Nneka Ogwumike with the Los Angeles Sparks, averaging career-highs of 13.6 points and 4.8 assists.

Wheeler returned to the Atlanta Dream in 2022, where she continued to make significant contributions, averaging 8.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Current Form and Future in Seattle

Currently, Wheeler is excelling in the Women’s Basketball Super League (WBSL) with Nesibe Aydin GSK. This season, she has appeared in 14 games, averaging 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, recording three double-doubles in the process.

“Seattle is one of the most prestigious franchises in the league, and I couldn’t be more proud to share the court with players like Nneka, Alysha, Skylar, and Gabby,” said Wheeler. “I can’t wait to get to work.”
