Seasonal Sadness: Why Winter Affects Mood

by Archynetys Health Desk

“The biological component is related to the reduction of exposure to natural light. Which means that we have less energy, we are more sleepy, more irritated and we also have a low mood. This is also explained by the fact that in the body the production of melatonin – the sleep hormone increases, because it is darker outside, and the production of serotonin – the hormone of happiness decreases”, explains psychiatrist and psychotherapist Lidia Sanduleac.

Because we have less sunlight, during this time of the year the level of vitamin D in the body also decreases. This vitamin helps synthesize the hormones responsible for our well-being: serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin. Therefore, the levels of these hormones also decrease.

“The autumn-winter period comes with the conclusion of many projects, with the completion of the year, with many deadlines, and this puts pressure on people and, respectively, increases the level of anxiety and the level of depression,” says the specialist.

At the same time, we spend more time at home and feel socially isolated.

“The outside temperature also has an impact, the body perceives the cold as a stress factor and enters a conservation regime. That’s why we are more tired, slower and even end up withdrawing”, says Lidia Sanduleac.

How we get through this period more easily

Psychotherapists call this condition “seasonal affective disorder” or “seasonal depression.” If it persists for more than two weeks and has a negative effect on our functionality, we should seek the help of a specialist.

Outdoor walks, even on cloudy days, balanced diet and regular physical activity are also welcome.

Light therapy and frequent meetings with friends are other methods recommended by psychologists to combat “winter blues”.
