Sean Spicer Warns Taoiseach Against Criticizing Trump During St. Patrick’s Day Visit

Former US Government Press Secretary Sean Spicer has issued a stern warning to Ireland’s Taoiseach, Micheál Martin. According to Spicer, Martin should use the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day trip to highlight the strong bond between Ireland and the United States rather than reprimand President Donald Trump on policy issues.

Spicer made his remarks on The Hard Shoulder radio show, expressing concern that the Taoiseach’s actions could damage the decades-old tradition.

The Risk of Undermining Goodwill

“The idea that the Taoiseach would think that it would be a good idea to reprimand the President of the United States on issues of policy… you know, we’ve got the right of free speech in our country, he has absolutely the right to go do that,” said Spicer. However, he advised that such an action could “undermine years of goodwill.”

“But I would hesitate to say [it] might be the last time that [this] celebration occurs, if he chooses to go down that path,” he cautioned. Spicer found it “extraordinarily undiplomatic” to use the celebration as a platform for criticism, adding, “I personally, as an Irish American, would be offended.”

The Impact on Diplomatic Relations

Spicer viewed the proposed criticism as “unbelievably short-sighted,” warning of potential long-term consequences for Ireland’s relationship with the United States. “I can’t think of a more short-sighted way to screw up a decades-long tradition that has come to captivate the entire country here,” he stated.

The Prestige of Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Spicer praised Ireland for its high-profile St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States. “Ireland punches above their weight when they come over for St. Patrick’s Day,” he noted. The event offers meetings with key US officials, including the President, National Security Advisor, and members of Congress, followed by a dedicated lunch in honor of the celebratory occasion.

No other nation receives such extensive recognition and celebration in the White House, Spicer emphasized, underlining the unique relationship between Ireland and the United States.

The EU Tariff Issue and Reciprocity

Addressing the ongoing EU tariffs issue, Spicer stated that President Trump is seeking “reciprocity” in trade agreements. “On issues of tariffs and non-tariff barriers, he’s looking industry by industry to determine whether the US is receiving a fair deal,” he explained.

Spicer believed that Trump understands the challenges facing smaller economies like Ireland in trade negotiations but is committed to ensuring fair market access for US industry.

The Need for Diplomatic Sensitivity

In conclusion, Spicer underscored the importance of treating the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with the respect and diplomatic sensitivity they deserve. By focusing on the shared heritage and cultural ties, rather than policy disagreements, Ireland can continue to enjoy the unique honors and recognition afforded by the United States.

“If the Taoiseach chooses to latch on to this moment to advance a personal, political, ideological view, he will have no one to blame but himself for the consequences,” Spicer warned.
