Sea Lion Survives Headshot Wounds | California Rescue

A sea lion in Southern California has somehow cheated death…twice.

Confetti, an adult male California sea lion, is recovering at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, CA, after he was rescued from the Ballona Creek in Los Angeles.

He was in bad shape when he was picked up. But upon further inspection – specifically an X-ray – his condition was worse than previously believed. It was discovered that Confetti had somehow survived not one, but two gunshot wounds to the head.

According to the Marine Mammal Care Center, Confetti had a host of medical issues when he was brought in. In a Facebook post announcing their patient, they wrote:

“Confetti tested positive for leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that affects the kidneys and can be fatal if not treated. His blood work also showed concerning liver abnormalities. Our veterinary experts started him on supportive medications and antibiotics. He was also given fluids to help with dehydration.”

But after time and care, the sea lion began to improve. After being extremely lethargic and showing no interest in food, by day seven, he began chasing and eating fish.

Then they discovered the gunshot wounds:

“Incidentally, skull X-rays taken during Confetti’s initial exams showed that he has two bullets in his head, indicating that this was actually the second time he had narrowly escaped death.”

Shockingly, it’s not all too uncommon for sea lions to have suffered gunshot wounds. It’s something rescue crews like this see more commonly than one would expect.

The Marine Mammal Care Center continued:

“Sadly, it is not unusual to find sea lions that have been shot by humans, highlighting the prevalence of violence these animals face. Many die, but some, like Confetti, survive. As he continues to recover, thanks to compassionate people like you, his resilience offers hope after a very tough year for sea lions in 2025.”
