Scot Elkins to Retire as Formula E Race Director After Seven Years
In a significant update for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Scot Elkins, who has served as Race Director for the past seven years, has announced his retirement from the role following the Miami E-Prix on April 12, 2024. This decision is due to personal reasons, including the recent loss of his father.
Marek Hanaczewski Takes Over as New Race Director
Elkins’ successor will be Marek Hanaczewski, who has been a part of Formula E’s race control operations since 2014. Previous to this role, Hanaczewski had served as Deputy Race Director since Season 8 and has shown his capability with additional leadership duties, including acting as Race Director at the recent São Paulo E-Prix.
To ensure a seamless transition, Hanaczewski and Elkins will swap roles starting with the upcoming Jeddah E-Prix on February 14-15, 2024. This arrangement will allow both individuals to prepare thoroughly for their new responsibilities.
Benoit Dupont Joins as New Deputy Race Director
From the Monaco E-Prix onwards, Benoit Dupont, the current Head of Circuit Operations for Formula E and Sporting Matters in the FIA World Endurance Championship, will step in as Deputy Race Director. This appointment enhances the team, leveraging Dupont’s extensive experience in circuit operations and his involvement as a Circuit Inspector in the FIA High Performance Programme.
Dupont’s experience as Hanaczewski’s deputy in São Paulo further solidifies his readiness to support Hanaczewski in his new role.
Elkins Reflects on His Time with Formula E
“After 10 years in Formula E, the time has come for me to retire as Race Director,” Elkins stated. “With the recent loss of my father, I have new responsibilities at home that require my attention. While I had hoped to complete Season 11, my plans have been accelerated, and my focus is now on my family.”
“I will continue working in motorsport, primarily on projects based in the USA. Being part of the Formula E paddock has been an honor, and I am grateful for the friendships forged over the years. Although I am sad to leave, I am confident in the staff who will carry on the championship’s success.”
Hanaczewski’s Anticipation For His New Role
“Stepping into the role of Race Director is an exciting new chapter in my motorsport career,” Hanaczewski shared. “Since 2017, I have had the privilege to work alongside Scot, who has been a great leader, mentor, teacher, and friend.”
“I am incredibly grateful for the knowledge and trust he has shared with me over the years. I look forward to leading race operations and ensuring the continued growth and success of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.”
A Recognition of Scot Elkins’ Contributions
Marek Nawarecki, Senior Circuit Sport Director at the FIA, acknowledged Elkins’ significant impact on Formula E. “For the past seven seasons, Scot has made a major contribution to the development of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which has grown considerably over that period and continues to evolve.”
“His involvement has been key to the management of the sport, and we are grateful for his dedication and leadership. We look forward to supporting Marek Hanaczewski and Benoit Dupont as they take on their new roles.”
