Scherzer to Blue Jays? Latest Rumors & Trade Possibility

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Max Scherzer could continue his career. According to The Athleticthe Toronto Blue Jays are still in contact with the right-handed pitcher, who has already won the Cy Young Award three times.

The 41-year-old pitcher went 5-5 in 17 starts last year in Toronto. He posted a 5.19 ERA and 1.294 WHIP in 85 innings. Scherzer also had 82 strikeouts and allowed 23 walks.

Scherzer shined in the Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners as he pitched 5 2/3 innings in an 8-2 win that allowed the Jays to tie the series 2-2. We also remember the veteran’s disappointment when his manager John Schneider wanted to replace him.

He also made two World Series starts, including a four-and-a-third innings-long one-run start in Game 7, which the Blue Jays ultimately lost in 11 innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

If he did return, Scherzer would be unlikely to return without a clearly defined role. Scherzer would increase the number of potential starters to eight in a rotation that could include Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios and Cody Ponce.

Scherzer played in 483 games, including 474 as a starter, for the Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Dodgers, Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks. His career record is 221-117 with a 3.22 ERA in 2,963 innings pitched.

His 3,489 strikeouts rank 11th all-time and second among active pitchers, behind former Tigers teammate Justin Verlander (3,553).
