Near Disaster Averted: Viktor Verhulst and Sarah Puttemans’ Dog Joey Briefly Goes Missing

A perhaps heartbreaking situation was narrowly avoided this week when Joey, the beloved dog of Viktor Verhulst and Sarah Puttemans, briefly went missing in Knokke.

A Relaxing Dinner Interrupted

During a recent podcast episode of ‘Vik & Gert’, Viktor Verhulst recounted a moment of panic that struck while he and Sarah Puttemans were enjoying a meal at a restaurant in Knokke. Joey, their dog,was being cared for by Sarah’s parents at their home.

The tranquility of their evening was shattered when Sarah received an alarming phone call. According to Verhulst, Sarah reacted with immediate distress, exclaiming that Joey had “went walking” and was heading home alone.

The race Against Time

Verhulst described the immediate aftermath:

Suddenly Sarah got a phone call. She jumped in a panic, said “Joey went walking” and walked home. I left everything behind. I stayed a little quieter. I thought: it didn’t make sense now to walk home in a panic. We were only 200 meters from home.

While Sarah rushed back home, Viktor, maintaining a calmer demeanor, followed shortly after, reasoning that a panicked response wouldn’t be productive given their proximity to the house. The couple was only 200 meters away.

A Fortunate Resolution

Upon arriving home, they discovered that Joey had been safely returned. A woman, recognizing Joey and knowing where he lived, had found him and brought him back. The relief was palpable.

verhulst expressed the depth of his concern, stating, “If something ever happens to Joey, I think I will never get Sarah well again.” This sentiment underscores the profound bond many peopel share with their pets, who are often considered members of the family.

Behind the Scenes: An Hour of Uncertainty

Unbeknownst to Viktor and Sarah, Joey had been missing for nearly an hour. Sarah’s parents, hoping to resolve the situation independently, had initially attempted to find Joey themselves to spare their daughter the worry. This highlights the lengths to which family members will go to protect one another from distress.

Pet Safety and Awareness

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of pet safety and awareness. According to recent statistics from the American Veterinary Medical association (AVMA), approximately 10 million pets are lost each year in the United States alone. Microchipping, proper identification tags, and secure leashes are crucial for preventing such incidents. furthermore, community vigilance, as demonstrated by the woman who returned Joey, plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of our furry companions.
