Saquon Barkley’s Dominant 2024: A Premier Running Back Embraces His New Era

Saquon Barkley leaps into the end zone and places his hands to his face in evident surprise. Yet, his reaction isn’t reflective of shock; rather, it’s a testament to his continuous excellence.

Barkley’s spontaneous celebration came immediately following his third touchdown in the NFC Championship game, a pivotal score that sealed the Philadelphia Eagles’ second Super Bowl berth in three years.

The game began with Barkley’s electrifying 60-yard touchdown run, quickly setting the tone for the rest of the contest. He added two more touchdowns throughout, finishing the game with 118 rushing yards and 15 carries. The Eagles’ offensive prowess culminated in seven rushing touchdowns, a Super Bowl-era postseason record.

A Stellar Playoff Performance

In just three playoff games this year, Barkley accumulated 442 rushing yards and five touchdowns. His incredible postseason performance follows a phenomenal regular season where he became the ninth player to surpass the 2,000-yard rushing mark.

For a player who transitioned from East Rutherford, New Jersey, to Philadelphia, Barkley has emerged as the Eagles’ offensive jewel and a key component in their winning formula. His contributions were so impactful that he received a nomination for the NFL Most Valuable Player award.

While Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens are considered frontrunners for MVP, Barkley’s nomination underscores his undeniable influence. Adrian Peterson, who won the award in 2011, hadn’t been a running back to receive the honor for 13 years.

From Struggles to Triumph

This season marks a stark contrast to Saquon Barkley’s previous experiences with the New York Giants. The acrimonious end to his tenure in New Jersey was unequaled, but joining the Philadelphia Eagles became a turning point. His current success is a testament to the supportive environment in Philadelphia.

“It’s amazing, man,” Barkley told FOX following the Eagles’ victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship. “We’re here. Super Bowl. But the goal wasn’t just getting there. The goal’s to win, and we’re gonna celebrate, enjoy this, and get right back to work.”

The signs of Barkley’s breakout season were evident from the start. He entered the 2024 campaign with a point to prove after feeling undervalued by the Giants. During his “Scoop City” podcast appearance, Barkley expressed frustration over the negotiations, calling the team’s decision to not offer him a contract acceptable offer “a slap in the face.”

His switch to the Eagles wasn’t just a move between rival teams; it echoed his personal journey. Born in the Bronx, Barkley moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, when he was young, and these life experiences resonated with his transition to Philadelphia.

His teammate Elijhaa Penny highlighted the improved situation Barkley received in Philadelphia. “He landed in Philly with a better situation with the offensive line, better front office, and better management right now,” Penny said.

With added motivation and a healthy offseason following his injury history, Barkley was poised to thrive in his new home. His early performances set a solid foundation, but a three-week span between Weeks 7 and 9 saw his play explode.

The Prodigy Unleashed

In Week 7, Barkley showcased his abilities against the Giants. He torched his former team, finishing with 176 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The game was on his terms, and head coach Nick Sirianni even asked if he wanted to keep running late in an attempt to break his single-game rushing mark.

Two weeks later, Barkley set the NFL world alight with a reverse no-look hurdle over a defender during a narrow victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sirianni dubbed it the “best play” he’d seen, while Barkley also ran for 159 yards.

Barkley's reverse no-look hurdle against the Jaguars was one of his highlight plays from his excellent first season in Philadelphia.

This three-week stretch was a microcosm of Barkley’s exceptional full season with the Eagles. His regular-season play was marked with monstrous production and remarkable athleticism. Between Week 11 and Week 17, he surpassed 100 rushing yards in all games except one, even shattering the Eagles’ franchise record with 255 yards against the Los Angeles Rams.

His special season culminated in Week 17, when he recorded his 2,000 rushing yards for the first time in a career milestone. Although he fell just 101 yards short of Eric Dickerson’s all-time single-season record, Barkley’s 2024 campaign with the Eagles is etched in history as one of the best ever.

Barkley finished the season on 2,005 rushing yards, just 101 yards shy of Eric Dickerson's all-time single-season record.

In the playoffs, Barkley continued his outstanding performance. His contributions were crucial, providing the necessary thrust to the Eagles’ offense when the passing game struggled. His star power secured a second straight Super Bowl appearance for Philadelphia.

Remarkably, Barkley is just shy of breaking Terrell Davis’ single-season rushing record. With 2,447 yards accumulated from regular season and playoff games combined, Barkley needs only 30 more yards to surpass Davis’ 1998 record of 2,476 yards.

A Position of Admiration

Barkley’s dominance has garnered universal praise from teammates and opponents alike. “Speechless. The guy is special, man,” offensive tackle Jordan Mailata told NFL Network’s Stacey Dales after the dominant win over the Washington Commanders. “What else is there to say? The first play of the game. The guy goes out for 60 to the house.”

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay echoed similar sentiments. “I was so excited that he scored, but then again, I was so mad that he scored so fast, that we just had a 17-play drive, like: ‘We finna send us back out there?'” Slay shared on his podcast with Richard Sherman.

“Man, that man so good my homeboys used to have a little talk about running backs. I said: ‘Man, Saquon is that dude, man.'” Slay continued. “No one’s seen a running back like this.”

Elijhaa Penny agreed, highlighting Barkley’s performance during their time in New York. “Everybody saw it. We all knew it. We all saw it. Just in Philly, he’s got the right people around him, got the right personnel around him,” Penny explained.

“And then they’re featuring in that offense through him. And anytime you can feature an offense around a running back that’s rolling this late in the season, your chances are very high in winning the granddaddy,” he concluded.

The Evolution of Saquon Barkley

Drafted by the Giants with the second overall pick in 2018 out of Penn State, Barkley arrived with high expectations. In college, he set numerous records for the Nittany Lions and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

His transition to the NFL brought pressure, but Penny noted Barkley never shied away from challenging situations. “Each year, he’s just getting better. Like I said, I keep on harping on it – I just think that, like, his preparation and his mindset … (he can) do anything that he wants to do.”

Barkley’s preparation and competitive mindset were critical to his success. Penny emphasized these qualities as key factors behind Barkley’s effectiveness. “Saquon’s a generational guy
