On March 8th, an unknown man fell in the Elbow area of the Säntis. “Any help came too late for the mountaineer who fell and he could only be rescued dead,” wrote the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police in a media release. The man’s identity could now be clearly established in collaboration with the Institute of Forensic Medicine.

The unknown hiker was a 48-year-old man from Poland. His family said he was an experienced mountaineer. The deceased was handed over to his family for burial, according to the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police.
