Mounting Concerns Over Public Health in Calabria’s Highlands
A coalition known as teh “La Cura” Committee is sounding the alarm about the deteriorating state of public healthcare services in the mountainous regions of Calabria, italy. The committee is set to present its findings and proposals at a public meeting in San Giovanni in Fiore, aiming to revitalize healthcare provisions in areas served by hospitals in San giovanni in Fiore, Acri, Serra San Bruno, and Soveria Mannelli.
Public Forum to Address Systemic Issues
scheduled for Friday at 5 PM at the Jure restaurant, the meeting will feature addresses from prominent figures including Giovanni Iaquinta, a southernist advocate; Silvio Tunnra, representing the Acrese Laca Association; journalist Alessandro sirianni, president of the Committee for the rentino Hospital; Rocco La Rizza, a member of the committee for the Hospital of Serra San Bruno; and journalist Emiliano Morrone. Morrone is expected to deliver a critical analysis of the contradictions within the current healthcare return plan and the perceived deception regarding Essential levels of Care (LEA).
the event is designed as an open forum, encouraging participation from civil society, political figures, and social organizations. The “La Cura” Committee emphasizes the critical juncture at which public health in thes mountain communities finds itself.
The Looming threat of Privatization and Depopulation
The committee warns that without immediate and complete regional intervention, public healthcare in these areas risks being supplanted by private entities within a few years. This shift, they argue, would exacerbate the ongoing depopulation of the region, leading to severe economic and social repercussions. This concern is notably relevant given that rural areas frequently enough face challenges in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals, making them vulnerable to service reductions.
Public health in the mountain areas of Calabria is at the crossroads. If it is not relaunched by a new regional programming, it risks being replaced by the private one within a few years. In addition, the territory would continue to depopulate, with serious economic and social consequences.

Stagnation and Inadequate Investment Plague Mountain Hospitals
The “La cura” Committee highlights a decade-long stagnation in healthcare improvements for Calabria’s mountain regions. They assert that mountain hospitals continue to operate with the same inadequate infrastructure they had in 2010. Despite ongoing public expenditure on superficial or supplementary services, the committee criticizes the lack of long-term vision and substantial investment needed to transform these hospitals into attractive and sustainable healthcare centers. This lack of investment contrasts sharply with the growing need for accessible healthcare in aging rural populations.
Since 2010, there is no news regarding the health care in the mountain areas of Calabria.Mountain hospitals have the same inadequate configuration as then. Between more,we continue to spend public money for token or additional services, with higher costs to hiring stable medical personnel. Above all, a vision of depth and courage is wholly lacking on how to relaunch mountain hospitals and there is no mention of investments to transform them into attractive structures.

The committee expresses deep concern over the prevailing attitudes of resignation and improvisation, coupled with political opportunism, which they believe are hindering progress. They also denounce attempts to distort or rewrite the history of regional healthcare. The committee emphasizes the urgent need for transparency and a realistic assessment of the situation.
In the absence of participation, exacerbated by progressive increase in poverty, tend to prevail – denounces the committee “La Cura ” – Two widespread attitudes: resignation el’improvisation, accompanied by evident political opportunism, by useless forms of protagonism and even attempts to cancel and rewrite the history of regional health.
