Samsung‘s Android XR Headset to Rival Apple Vision pro with Similar Price Tag

The upcoming Samsung Android XR headset is expected to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro in both features and price, targeting the high-end VR/AR market.

Samsung’s forthcoming Android XR headset is projected to carry a price tag reaching $3,000, positioning it in direct competition with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

According to a report by Korean publication Newsworks, pre-orders for the headset are anticipated to begin on September 29, with an official release slated for October.

The Android XR headset from Samsung will initially be available in South Korea, with a global launch to follow at a later, unspecified date.

Apple adopted a similar strategy with the Vision Pro, launching it first in the U.S. before expanding to other markets in 2024.

The estimated price range of $1,800 to $3,000 for the Samsung Android XR headset is based on currency conversions from South Korean won, as reported by Newsworks. While previous Samsung product releases, such as the Galaxy S25 Edge phone, saw relatively consistent pricing between Korea and the U.S., recent tariff changes could impact the final cost.

Despite the wide price range, it’s evident that the Samsung Android XR headset is not aiming to be a budget-amiable option for VR enthusiasts. Like the Vision Pro, it is indeed expected to deliver high pixel density for immersive VR and AR experiences, remaining in a higher price bracket than more accessible headsets like the Meta Quest lineup.

Samsung initially unveiled the Android XR headset concept and design in late 2024, in collaboration with Google. This marks Samsung’s return to the VR space since its earlier Gear VR headsets and signifies the launch of the broader Android XR platform.

This platform is comparable to Meta’s Horizon OS, which is built upon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

samsung’s Android XR headset is intended to showcase the potential of the platform, while other manufacturers are expected to offer more affordable options. Xreal, for instance, has teased Project Ara smart glasses, which are similar to the $649 Real One Pro.

Samsung’s XR Play: High-End VR and the Android Ecosystem

“Samsung’s Android XR headset will demonstrate what’s possible in the space, while other manufacturers’ headsets will fill out the more affordable categories.”

The move signals a strategic push by Samsung to establish a foothold in the burgeoning XR market, leveraging the ubiquity of the Android operating system.
