Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: Fold Test & Durability

Galaxy Z TriFold is a first generation product. For this reason, there are question marks about its performance and durability, especially since it has folding and moving parts such as its two hinges and its huge screen that folds from two points.

At launch, Samsung claimed that the Galaxy Z TriFold could be folded and opened 200,000 times, and the device was recently put to the test by a YouTube channel.

So how well did it perform in the torture test?

South Korea-based Omokgyo Electronics Shopping Mall shared a YouTube livestream showing the Galaxy Z TriFold being folded and unfolded continuously. Throughout the video, three presenters took turns folding and unfolding the phone in a process that took days until the device broke.

One of the phone’s two hinges started making squeaking noises after 61,000 folds. The second hinge started producing similar sounds after 121,000 folds. Finally, after approximately 144,000 folding and unfolding operations, the elasticity of the hinge weakened; The device did not remain fully open unless forced. Despite this, the foldable screen continued to work perfectly, so it would not be correct to say that the Galaxy Z TriFold was completely broken.

Although the 144,000 folding and unfolding numbers fall short of Samsung’s claim, it is unlikely that a normal user would be able to fold and unfold the phone continuously for days as seen in the video. Additionally, to measure the number of folds and unfolds, the YouTube channel placed sensors on the screens; This may have affected the phone’s folding mechanism.

Therefore, under normal usage conditions, it may be possible for the Galaxy Z TriFold to exceed the 200,000 folds and unfolds that Samsung claims.

The claimed durability of the Galaxy Z TriFold is less than half that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which can withstand up to 500,000 folds and unfolds. In the future, Samsung may launch improved triple-folding phones with higher durability ratings.
