Samsung Fold 5 Leaks: What We Know Now

The Galaxy Z TriFold is still being talked about. 10-inch screen, 200 Mpx sensor… but an astonishing design. We take stock.

Samsung tried to keep it a secret, but it was a wasted effort. After timidly showing a prototype of its Galaxy Z TriFold during an event in Korea, the rumor floodgates are now wide open. The device, which could well shake up the folding smartphone market, is the subject of increasingly detailed leaks.

The latest information, including that of the famous leaker Evan Blass, paint the portrait of a true technological monster, but which also hides some design oddities.

A technical sheet that imposes

Let’s start with the basics, Evan Blass confirms what we suspected: the device will be called the “Galaxy Z TriFold”. A logical name for a device that folds in three.

The other promise of this format is the possibility of accessing an interior screen worthy of a tablet. Once unfolded, the Z TriFold would offer a slab of 10 inchestransforming the smartphone into a real compact tablet. This is much more than the 8-inch “square” screen of the Z Fold 7, but the device would not ignore telephony. It will be possible to use a cover screen in 6.5-inch format, the same size as the second screen of Samsung’s current flagship.

In terms of brightness, we are talking about 2,600 nits peak for the external screen and 1,600 nits for the interior panel.

Under the hood: Snapdragon and megapixels

To animate this beast, Samsung would opt for a SoC Snapdragon and although Evan Blass does not specify which one, we can logically count on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, or at worst on the Snapdragon 8 Elite which we already find on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

On the photo side, no concessions. The Z TriFold would carry the same 200 Mpx main sensor than the Z Fold 7.

An XXL battery… and a design that questions

Who says three shutters says… three batteries? Almost, because autonomy is the crux of the matter for this type of device.

Sources differ slightly on capacity. Evan Blass discusses 5 437 mAhwhile others, like Ice Universe or the Korean media The Chosunbet on 5 600 mAh. In both cases, we logically exceed the 4,400 mAh of the Z Fold 7 without reaching the heights offered by the silicon-carbon batteries of certain smartphones. This battery would be intelligently divided into three separate cells, housed in each segment of the phone.

The strange detail: shutters of unequal thickness?

This is where it gets curious since the three parts would not have the same thickness (3.9 mm, 4 mm and 4.2 mm). A very unusual design point and it’s unclear how this will translate in hand. Will the phone be unbalanced? Or is it an engineering trick to accommodate the different components? It remains a mystery.

Other rumors, cited by Ice Universe, specify that the device would measure 4.2 mm once opened (similar to the Z Fold 7) but would reach 14 mm once closed. This is significantly thicker than the 8.9 mm of the Z Fold 7. The “tri-fold” format will necessarily have a cost in terms of thickness in the pocket, even if Huawei’s Mate XTs is limited to 12.8 mm once folded.

Launch imminent, but not for everyone

If you inform them of The Chosun are accurate, the Galaxy Z TriFold launch could be imminent. He would arrive on December 5, in South Korea.

On the other hand, Samsung would only plan production in limited quantities for this first test. Not only will it be (very) expensive, that’s no surprise, but it will only be available in certain selected markets. It is therefore not at all certain that it will be available in France from the launch. In terms of price, you would have to count between 2,500 and 3,000 euros.

Samsung seems to want to test the ground before, perhaps, democratizing this new format which is already causing a lot of ink to flow.
