Samina Khatoon: Pioneering Ladakh’s Women in Ice Hockey
Samina Khatoon, a 15-year-old girl from Trespone in Kargil district, Ladakh, has broken barriers and debunked stereotypes. Her journey from receiving mild disapproval from her mother to becoming the youngest player on Ladakh’s women’s ice hockey team is a testament to perseverance and societal shifts.
A Common Gift, An Uncommon Destiny
Samina’s path to glory in winter sports began with a gift from her uncle—a pair of skiing boots intended for her elder brother. Her brother’s lack of interest in the boots inadvertently gifted Samina a chance to pursue her dream. Despite her mother’s concerns that she would get hurt, Samina refused to back down. She started juggling her studies with intense practice from 2020, gradually winning her mother’s support.
A Shift in Mindset
The historically conservative society in Kargil district has recently witnessed a promising progression. Once, where gender biases were prevalent, families are now supporting their children, irrespective of their gender, in pursuing their passions. This shift has opened doors for young girls to step into traditionally male-dominated fields, including ice hockey.
Abid Ali’s Journey of Witnessing Change
Abid Ali, the District Youth Services and Sports Officer of Kargil, has observed this transformation firsthand over the years. He notes that more girls are stepping up to take on challenging sports such as ice hockey, thanks to supportive policies and a growing sense of empowerment.
Infrastructure and Support Systems
To promote women’s participation in sports, the administration has introduced several initiatives. The Special Development Package provided free equipment to clubs last year, and subsidies are offered for gears and other necessities. In addition, plans to develop rinks across Kargil are underway.
Propelled by Passion and Coaching
The Ladakh Women’s Ice Hockey Foundation, established in 2016, has been instrumental in nurturing young talent. Their visits to rural areas showcased a significant interest among girls, leading to the foundation’s continued commitment to coaching.
A numbers Game
The impact of these efforts is evident in the increasing numbers of girls participating in ice hockey. Abid Ali reports that out of 200 registered children under a sports department initiative, nearly 40% are girls.
The Role of Safety
Chamba Tsetan, founder of Adventure Sports Frontier of Ladakh (ASFL) and part of the Indian men’s ice hockey team, emphasizes the importance of safety in encouraging girls to play. Facilities for female players are prioritized, assuring parents and paving the way for broader participation.
Encouragement and Camaraderie
The women’s ice hockey team members, including goalkeeper Noor Jahan, stress that encouragement and teamwork are vital to overcoming discouragement. Team spirit and support from each other are key to their success.
A Bright Future
Samina Khatoon’s appointment as assistant captain of the Union Territory Women’s team highlights her potential. Her teammates affectionately call her “bulu,” recognizing her promise. Despite acknowledging the road ahead, Samina remains optimistic and dedicated to her craft.
This inspiring narrative from Samina and her fellow players demonstrates the power of support systems and a growing acceptance of women in male-dominated sports. As she competes in the Khelo India Winter Games 2025, she not only represents Ladakh but also a generation of girls breaking traditional barriers to follow their passions.
