Under the guide of a torch, one of us (Dr Salek Ali Mohamed Elabd) found his way to the delivery room of a hospital in southwestern Algeria. Rays of light pierced through the windows from a car parked outside, positioned intentionally to be a light source, casting the shadows of the medical team and the patient in labour, Mariem, across the room. After washing his hands with soap and water—the hospital has few surgical gloves—Salek approached the mother to prepare for delivery. The rest of the team monitored their stances and movements to ensure no one blocked the light source.
