Safer Internet Day: Microsoft Survey Reveals India’s Excitement and Fears Over AI
On Safer Internet Day, Microsoft unveiled its ninth annual Global Online Safety Survey, offering insights into the rapid adoption of generative AI in India and the concurrent concerns about its potential misuse.
India’s AI Adoption Surges
The survey, conducted between July 19 and August 9, 2024, across 15 countries including India, polled 14,800 teens, parents, and adults. India stands out with a significant increase in AI usage, at 65%, a notable 26% jump from 2023, compared to the global average of 31%.
Millennials, aged 25-44, lead the way in AI adoption, with a striking 84% using generative AI. Popular applications include translation, answering questions, enhancing workplace efficiency, and assisting with student assignments.
Concerns Over AI Misuse
While the enthusiasm for AI is palpable, it is tempered by growing fears about its potential downsides. Indians, like their global counterparts, express significant concerns about online abuse (76%), deepfakes (74%), AI-generated scams (73%), and AI hallucinations (70%).
Parental Awareness and Teen Experiences
The survey also highlights a rise in parental awareness about their children’s online risks. Sixty-one percent of Indian parents feel prepared to discuss online dangers, a higher percentage compared to the global average of 41%. Moreover, 78% of parents believe their teens have encountered online risks, a sentiment shared by 82% of Indian teens who reported facing such challenges.
When dealing with online risks, Indian teens overwhelmingly turn to their parents for support. Many also adopt defensive practices like blocking accounts or reporting issues.
Microsoft’s Commitment to Responsible AI
In response to these findings, Microsoft reiterates its commitment to responsible AI development. The company emphasizes safety architecture, media provenance, content moderation, industry collaboration, updated legislation, and public education. Their Family Safety Toolkit serves as a guide for families to discuss online activities and make informed use of safety features.
