Tragic Sinkhole Collapse in Pennsylvania Claims Life of Grandmother
Tragedy struck Unity Township, Pennsylvania, as a sinkhole opened up behind a local restaurant, claiming the life of 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard. Ms. Pollard is believed to have fallen into the sinkhole while searching for her cat. The incident highlights the hidden dangers posed by abandoned mines, a common issue in the former coal-mining region.
Massive Search Effort and Grim Discovery
The search for Ms. Pollard prompted a massive response from authorities, involving over two dozen fire departments, search and rescue teams, and a construction company. The recovery operation, lasting approximately 80 hours, utilized a map of the mine, dating back to the 1940s, to pinpoint the area where Ms. Pollard may have fallen.
Unfortunately, despite the extensive effort, Ms. Pollard’s body was recovered from beneath the collapsed mine shaft, 12 feet away from the sinkhole’s opening.

Pennsylvania State Police are urging residents who notice any depressions or sinkholes to contact the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation immediately.
