Russia to Develop Nuclear Shield Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Amid rising geopolitical tensions, Russia is set to develop its nuclear shield in the coming years. Alexei Lechachov, head of the Government Nuclear Energy Corporation, Ross Atom, announced the plans, citing “grave threats” to the country.

Both Russia and the united States are currently modernizing their nuclear arsenals, including systems designed to monitor and intercept incoming missiles. Meanwhile, China is expanding its nuclear capabilities to surpass those of France and Britain.

According to a Russian media agency, Lechachov stated, “In light of the current geopolitical situation, we are facing great threats to the existence of our country. Therefore, the nuclear shield, wich is also a sword, represents a guarantee of our sovereignty. We realize today that the nuclear shield must be developed in the coming years.”

These comments follow remarks made weeks prior by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, who asserted that the danger of global nuclear confrontation “did not diminish.” Ryabkov also pointed to the deployment of American weapons systems in “areas where this directly affects the security of Russia.”

Research from the Union of American Scholars indicates that Russia possesses approximately 4,300 nuclear warheads, both stored and deployed, while the United States holds around 3,700, representing about 87 percent of the total global stockpile.

China is estimated to have around 600 nuclear warheads, followed by France with approximately 290,and Britain with 225.

Trump’s Golden Dome

In May,former US president Donald Trump unveiled plans for a “golden dome,” a missile defense shield modeled after Israel’s “Iron Dome,” with an estimated cost of $175 billion.

The “Golden Dome” aims to intercept a wide range of missiles, including ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, to counter threats from Russia and China.

Russia is actively enhancing its intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, developing new systems to improve the effectiveness of its nuclear arsenal and ensure its ability to overcome missile defense systems.

Russian Nuclear Trinity

Last June, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of the “nuclear trinity” in the new armament program, referring to land, sea, and air-based military assets capable of carrying and launching nuclear warheads.

Putin stated, “There is no doubt that a special attention should be paid to the nuclear homeland, which was and will remain a guarantee of Russia’s sovereignty, and plays a major role in maintaining the balance of power in the world.”

He also noted that “95% of the weapons in the Russian strategic nuclear forces are fully updated,” adding, “This is a good indicator, and it is the highest among all nuclear forces in the world.”

“There is no doubt that a special attention should be paid to the nuclear homeland, which was and will remain a guarantee of Russia’s sovereignty.”
