Russia’s stance in Syria seems to be changing dramatically after President Bashar al-Assad’s unexpected resignation. Following months of emphasizing Russia’s pivotal role in supporting Assad, Russian media and officials are adopting a noticeably muted approach.

Contrary to their previous boasts and propaganda efforts, Russian TV channels and newspapers are either downplaying or completely omitting news of Syria’s unfolding situation.
In a stark contrast to previous coverage, the front page of Rossiiskaya Gazeta, Russia’s official government newspaper, dedicated minimal space to the Assad developments. Instead, a prominent article focused on Russia’s security pact with Belarus, highlighting Putin’s ambitions beyond Syria’s borders.
Even Russia’s response to Assad’s exit has shifted. While initially silent, the Kremlin has released statements suggesting a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic facilities in Syria. The Kremlin’s focus has shifted to securing its strategic interests rather than championing Assad’s regime.

Instead, Russian media outlets are attributing the fall to Assad himself and the Syrian army, suggesting they lacked the ability to resist the offensive. This shift in Russia’s approach may be driven by several factors. The speed of Assad’s fall serves as a stark reminder that seemingly secure leaders can be quickly overthrown, something Putin might be keen to avoid acknowledging. Moreover, Russia’s primary aim in Syria appears to be securing strategic interests, a goal achievable even without Assad’s continued rule.
