Russian Embassy Rejects French Cyberattack Accusations as “Unfounded”

Moscow Responds to Allegations of Cyber Interference

The Russian Embassy in France has vehemently denied accusations made by French authorities regarding a series of cyberattacks allegedly orchestrated by Moscow. The embassy released a statement characterizing the claims as “unfounded” and lacking any concrete evidence.

Denial of Involvement in Macron Campaign Hack and Othre Incidents

Specifically, the embassy addressed allegations that Russia was behind the hacking and dissemination of internal documents from Emmanuel macron’s campaign team just before the 2017 presidential election. They also refuted claims of Russian involvement in the 2015 sabotage of the TV5Monde television channel, and also other cyber intrusions targeting French entities between 2021 and 2024.

Embassy Condemns “Megaphone Diplomacy”

The Russian Embassy criticized what it termed the “diplomacy of the megaphone” employed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Quai d’orsay). According to the embassy, this approach serves only to fuel anti-Russian sentiment within French society and legitimize the current French government’s aggressive policies toward Russia. This comes at a time when cybersecurity threats are on the rise globally. According to a recent report by Cybersecurity Ventures, global cybercrime costs are predicted to reach $10.5 trillion annually by 2025,highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing these threats.

French Accusations: A Timeline of Alleged Cyber Offenses

French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-noël Barrot, publicly accused Russia of targeting approximately a dozen French organizations with cyberattacks between 2021 and 2024. These accusations represent a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. The alleged hacking of Macron’s campaign,in particular, raised serious concerns about foreign interference in democratic processes. Similar accusations have been leveled against Russia in other countries, including the United States, regarding alleged interference in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Lack of Evidence Claimed by Russian Embassy

The core of the Russian Embassy’s defense rests on the assertion that French authorities possess no tangible proof to substantiate their accusations. The embassy maintains that the allegations are based on speculation and conjecture, rather then concrete evidence linking Russia to the alleged cyberattacks.

According to the Russian Embassy, the French authorities have no evidence of the guilt of the Russian party in the cyber attacks attributed to it.
