The Paramount studio will distribute “Rush Hour 4”, the new sequel to the comedy-action saga starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, as confirmed by media such as Deadline and Variety, among others.
This franchise, created by screenwriter Ross LaManna and directed by Brett Rattner for the New Line Cinema studio (which belongs to Warner Bros. Studios), has returned to the fore after a report published on Monday by the Semafor website that claims that US President Donald Trump is a fan of the “Rush Hour” saga films. (New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Studios are part, like CNN, of the Warner Bros. Discovery corporation.)
The first installment debuted in theaters in 1998, “Rush Hour 2” was released in 2001 and “Rush Hour 3” was released in 2007. Its premise is that of two police officers with totally different styles – Lee (Jack Chan) is an inspector from the Hong Kong Police and James Carter (Chris Tucker) is a detective from the Los Angeles Police Department – who are forced to work together to solve a case and eventually become friends. The franchise combines martial arts and action scenes with humor.
This is a formula that has worked. According to Box Office Mojo, which tracks box office receipts for Hollywood films, the franchise has grossed $507 million in the U.S. and $850 million globally.
Variety reported that Paramount will receive a flat distribution fee for releasing “Rush Hour 4” in theaters, but will not be responsible for promoting or financing the film.
A CNN report from 2019 already suggested that a fourth installment of the “Rush Hour” saga could be in production, after actor Chris Tucker published on his official Instagram account a photograph with Jack Chan in which they formed the number four with the fingers of their hands. Six years later, the sequel has yet to begin production.
Millionaire payment from Paramount to close legal process with Trump
The director of the franchise, Brett Rattner, has had his career interrupted after being accused in 2017 of sexual misconduct by actress Olivia Munn and others, according to a CNN report. In 2019 he produced the film “Georgetown” and has just completed the documentary “Melania”, about the life of first lady Melania Trump, which Amazon Prime Video plans to release on January 30, 2026, according to the website Deadline.
The plot and start date of production for “Rush Hour 4” are still unknown.
