Bisnis.comJAKARTA — The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar today Monday 5 January 2026 is expected to fluctuate with a tendency to weaken in the range of IDR 16,720 to IDR 16,750 per US dollar.
Quoting BloombergFriday (2/1/2026), the rupiah closed down 38 points or 0.23% to IDR 16,725 per US dollar at the end of last week. Meanwhile, the US dollar index strengthened 0.03% to 98.35.
Meanwhile, currencies in Asia closed mixed. The Japanese yen depreciated by 0.06% along with the Korean won by 0.02%. The Malaysian ringgit and Thai baht weakened 0.05% and 0.59% respectively against the US dollar.
Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures and economic observer, Ibrahim Assuaibi, explained that the strengthening of the US dollar index was driven by the minutes of the December FOMC meeting which showed divisions within the Fed.
“Some officials assess that interest rates need to be maintained after three cuts last year, while others see room for further interest rate cuts only if inflation consistently declines,” said Ibrahim.
Apart from US monetary policy, the strengthening of the greenback was also supported by the warming situation in various parts of the world.
In Eastern Europe, attacks between Russia and Ukraine continue despite mediation efforts by President Trump. In Latin America, Washington has just imposed new sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector.
The situation in the Middle East is increasingly worrying following Iran’s declaration of the potential for full-scale war with the US and its allies.
“For Monday trading [5/1/2026]”The rupiah exchange rate will fluctuate with a tendency to weaken in the range of IDR 16,720 to IDR 16,750 per US dollar,” he said.
