Bisnis.comJAKARTA — The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar is predicted to fluctuate but will close stronger in the range of IDR 16,650-IDR 16,690 per US dollar in today’s trading, Wednesday (17/12/2025).
Based on the data Bloombergthe rupiah ended trading on Tuesday (16/12/2025) by weakening 0.14% or 24 points to a level of IDR 16,691 per US dollar. At the same time, the US dollar index was observed to fall 0.03% to 98.27.
Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, Ibrahim Assuaibi, said that the global sentiment accompanying the movement of the rupiah included the release of US economic data for the period November 2025.
Another global sentiment also came from the development of the Russia-Ukraine geopolitical conflict. Ibrahim explained that the ceasefire negotiations mediated by the US showed progress towards peace. The end of this conflict will reopen Russian oil exports.
Meanwhile, domestic sentiment comes from the country’s debt balance. The government noted that Indonesia’s foreign debt (ULN) in October 2025 will reach US$423.9 billion or the equivalent of IDR 7,059.5 trillion (exchange rate IDR 16,653). This amount decreased compared to the September 2025 external debt position of US$425.6 billion. This decline was in line with the inflow of foreign capital in international Government Securities (SBN).
“Foreign capital flows are increasing because investor confidence in the Indonesian economy continues to grow,” said Ibrahim in his research, Tuesday (16/12/2025).
Even though it fell on a monthly basis, Indonesia’s external debt grew 0.3% year-on-year (YoY), which was mainly influenced by growth in public sector external debt. Meanwhile, the government’s external debt position in October 2025 was recorded at US$210.5 billion, or an annual growth of 4.7%.
Based on a number of existing sentiments, Ibrahim predicts that the rupiah will rebound and close higher in trading Wednesday (17/12/2025).
“For Wednesday’s trading, the rupiah currency fluctuated but closed stronger in the range of IDR 16,650 to IDR 16,690,” he said.

The Rupiah strengthened to IDR 16,680
The Rupiah opened stronger by 0.07% or 11 points to the level of IDR 16,680 per US dollar at 09.15 WIB.
At the same time, the dollar index was observed to have strengthened 0.10% to 98.35.
