Total dominance, clear superiority or demonstration of power: in the end there are a few terms that reflect what happened on Saturday at the Stade de Luxembourg. With 93:0, the Luxembourg national rugby team sent Estonia home again – and in doing so also sent a signal to the competition that promotion only leads through Luxembourg.
The game started perfectly: after five minutes, captain Hugo Bertani scored the first try and put his team on the road to victory. And then the FLR selection really began to overwhelm their opponents. The team was able to increase the score to 60-0 by half time – not only was the victory secured for the time being, but also the bonus point that you get from four attempts scored in a game.
In the second half, the heavy rain made life more difficult for the FLR team. In the end, the highest win in history was 93-0 with a total of 15 attempts scored. Another important aspect is that many young players were given playing time in the second half. In doing so, coach James Kent also laid a foundation for the future.
“We said it to each other before we went on the pitch: we respect each other and we also respect the opponent. We didn’t really know what to expect, especially since the conditions could have made it a difficult game. But we had promised ourselves certain things and I think we followed through on words,” said captain Hugo Bertani.
The Luxembourg national rugby team continues on April 18 next year against Latvia. The Latvians are in third place with seven points after two matchdays. There have already been two direct comparisons against Latvia and the Luxembourgers had to admit defeat twice. In April 2022, Luxembourg lost 0:28 in Latvia and six months later the team lost the away game 9:32. In this Europe Conference, Latvia won 59:7 against Norway, against whom Luxembourg won 60:6. The Latvians still seem to be the strongest opponents in the group, although the final away game in Finland will not be an easy task for the FLR team.
