Following Daniil Medvedev’s emotional display at the US Open, his close friend Andrey Rublev says that “Daniil Medvedev should feel able to open up emotionally – if he wants to – in the wake of his US Open antics.”
Medvedev, a former world number one, appeared “desperate and disconsolate” after losing in the first round to france’s benjamin Bonzi, raising concerns about his mental state.
The 29-year-old Russian became enraged by what he felt was an unfair call during a match point in the third set, which led him to rile up the New York crowd and yell at the chair umpire.
After losing the fifth set,MEDVEDEV “brutally destroyed a racquet before sitting dejectedly on his chair for several minutes.”
Boris Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion, suggested that Medvedev “seek professional help” after witnessing his behavior.
When asked if he would offer the same advice to his friend, Rublev responded: “I don’t know – if he wants to change and needs help he has me, a lot of other friends and family that will help him.”
Rublev added, “But it’s his life and his decision what he needs to do. Only he knows what is happening.”
