RSU & Latvian Basketball: Student Growth Partnership

The management of the RSU Latvian Sports Pedagogy Academy (LSPA) continues targeted meetings with sports federations in order to build practice-based cooperation in sports education. The purpose of the negotiations is to provide students with real professional development opportunities already during their studies.

The focus of cooperation is the provision of practice for specialization students, new directions in the subject of bachelor theses, development of joint projects, as well as the involvement of students in the training of sports referees and judging competitions at the level of children’s and youth competitions already during their studies.

On February 4, the RSU LSPA leadership visited the Latvian Basketball Association (LBS), where they met with its general secretary Kaspars Tsiprus. RSU LSPA director Diāna Laipniece, study direction, participated in the conversation Sports head Inese Łubinska, head of the Department of Individual and Team Sports Renārs Līcis and sports expert Kārlis Lejnieks.

Several specific agreements were reached during the meeting, including – the best RSU LSPA basketball specialization student will be offered the opportunity to intern in the training process led by the head coach of the Latvian men’s basketball team, students will have the opportunity to be involved in refereeing games of the Latvian Basketball Youth League, participate in the national team’s open training sessions and seminars, as well as help in the organization of major basketball events.

As Inese Lubinska says: “It is significant that within less than 24 hours after the meeting, the general secretary of LBS already offered to start cooperation in the development and implementation of specific basketball-related projects, confirming that

today’s dialogue becomes the basis for real cooperation tomorrow.”

RSU LSPA director Diāna Laipniece emphasizes that “innovative sports education is unthinkable without close cooperation with the industry, providing students with the opportunity to learn and grow in a professional sports environment already during their studies”.

It has already been reported that on January 28, the RSU LSPA management also met with the representatives of the Latvian Football Federation, discussing student internship opportunities, the connection of study programs with the needs of the football industry, as well as the involvement of students in competition and educational processes. Also in these negotiations, emphasis is placed on creating long-term, practice-based cooperation between the academic environment and the sports industry. Read more
