A man (36) from Rotterdam gets 8 years in prison and TBS for killing his own wife in an apartment in the Lombardijen district. The victim of 28 died in July last year due to strangulation.

The woman was found in the flat at night by family members. Not long after, her husband was arrested. That happened about 200 kilometers away just before the German border. The man was probably planning to flee abroad, because his navigation was set to ‘Copenhagen’.

The man, Selcuk A., says that he can’t remember much about that day. He assumes that he strangled his wife, he said in court. At the time of strangulation, their baby was present in the flat. The man left the child alone and then called family members of his wife with the message that the baby was alone in the flat. The child now lives with her grandparents.

Parting

According to the judiciary, A.’s wife wanted to divorce and he couldn’t hurt that. “I’ve never loved anyone,” he told the judge.

The Public Prosecution Service had demanded a prison sentence of fifteen years. The court cannot determine that there was a preconceived plan. He was therefore not convicted of murder, but for manslaughter.

In addition to a prison sentence, the man also receives TBS with compulsory treatment because experts have established that he has, among other things, a personality disorder and is aggressive. There is also problematic drug use. “His situation is estimated as very worrying,” Rijnmond quotes the judge.

The suspect must pay the relatives in total more than 58,000 euros in compensation.
