synchronized Holidays: A Rare Possibility for Extended Leisure

In a lucky alignment of celestial and religious calendars, Romanians are poised to enjoy an extended period of leisure in the spring of 2025. the convergence of Orthodox and Catholic Easter on April 20th, coupled with strategic planning around Labor Day on May 1st, promises a series of mini-vacations that will allow citizens to recharge and reconnect.

Easter Break: A four-Day Respite

The Easter holiday itself provides a solid foundation for relaxation. With government-mandated days off on friday, April 18th, Easter Sunday (April 20th), and Easter Monday (April 21st), employees can look forward to a four-day weekend. This extended break offers ample opportunity for travel, family gatherings, and personal pursuits. Students will enjoy an even longer break, with schools closed from April 18th to April 27th, according to the academic calendar.

Labor Day Extension: Bridging the Gap to a Longer Holiday

The respite doesn’t end with Easter. Just eleven days later, Labor Day on may 1st, a Thursday in 2025, presents another opportunity for an extended break. Recognizing the potential for boosting tourism and providing a much-needed rest for workers, the government has declared Friday, May 2nd, a free day for public sector employees. This strategic decision creates a “bridge” to the weekend of may 3rd and 4th, resulting in another four-day mini-vacation.

This means public sector employees will enjoy a total of eight days of vacation within a two-week span. the free day on May 2nd will be compensated for through extended work hours or alternative scheduling arrangements resolute by individual public institutions, with a deadline for completion by May 31st.

Winter Getaways: Saint Andrew’s Day, national day, and Christmas

looking ahead to the end of the year, another mini-vacation awaits in winter, encompassing Saint Andrew’s Day on November 30th and Romania’s National Day on December 1st. The Christmas season will also bring cheer, with free days on December 25th and 26th.

Compensation for Holiday Work

For those whose jobs require them to work during these public holidays, Romanian law mandates compensation. Employees are entitled to equivalent time off within 30 days. If granting time off is not feasible, employers must provide a wage increase of at least 100% of the employee’s base salary.
