Romanian Diabetology, exceptional editorial performance: A new Treatise on Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases

Romanian diabetology marks a landmark moment with the publication of a new Treatise on Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases, a comprehensive and up-to-date work that reflects the profound transformations of modern medicine and the professional maturity of the specialty community in Romania.

Diabetes mellitus, obesity and metabolic diseases today represent central areas of contemporary medicine, both through their ever-increasing prevalence and the complexity of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, the major impact on public health and the need for an integrated, multidisciplinary approach based on scientific evidence. In this context, the appearance of a new treatise dedicated to this field goes beyond the scope of an editorial endeavor and becomes an act of professional responsibility, as well as a necessary step to strengthen the specialty’s identity.

The last reference treatise in this area was published in 2011. Since then, the field has experienced spectacular developments: the redefinition of therapeutic paradigms in diabetes, with an emphasis on cardio-reno-metabolic protection, the accelerated development of insulin monitoring and administration technologies, the deepening of the role of nutrition, the microbiome and personalized medicine, as well as the recognition of obesity as a chronic, complex disease with systemic impact. In this interval, the need for a reference bibliography, updated and adapted to the clinical and academic realities in Romania, became not only obvious, but indispensable.

The new Treatise on Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases was designed precisely to meet this need. The work offers a comprehensive and integrated approach, covering the entire spectrum of the field: from pathophysiological and diagnostic foundations, to clinical management, prevention, complications, decisional algorithms and future perspectives of the specialty. Each chapter reflects the current state of knowledge, with a practical orientation, applicable in daily clinical activity, but also with the depth necessary for academic training and continuous professional development’, declared Prof. Univ. Dr. Bogdan Timar, collective editorial coordinator, president of the Romanian Society of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases.

The new treatise has been adopted as a bibliographic source for the examination of Medical Specialist in Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases, starting with the autumn session 2026. The work is the result of a remarkable collective effort, bringing together the contribution of 145 authors, recognized specialists.

I thank them for the rigor, time and energy invested, for the team spirit and for the willingness to build a professional landmark together. In an age where clinical and academic pressure is increasing, the achievement of such work is a clear demonstration of commitment to the specialty and to patients. At the same time, this editorial approach reflects the commitment of Romanian diabetology to align with international standards and to affirm its active role in the European and global scientific community. The treaty thus becomes an instrument of professional cohesion, a bridge between generations of doctors, between the academic environment and clinical practice, between guidelines and the realities of the medical system’, stated Prof. Univ. Dr. Bogdan Timar.

Through rigor, topicality and vision, the work supports the formation of a professional culture centered on excellence, responsibility and collaboration and demonstrates that coherent and sustainable projects can be built when there is an assumed strategic direction and a common effort.

We dedicate this work to all professionals who, day by day, care for people with diabetes, obesity and metabolic diseases, aware that, beyond algorithms and therapeutic targets, the real stake is the quality and duration of patients’ lives. This treatise is about science, but also about responsibility. About the present, but especially about the future that we have the duty to build together’, said Prof. Univ. Dr. Bogdan Timar.

The Treatise on Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases is available in its entirety, FREE of charge, for reading and downloading, on the page of the Romanian Society of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases.
