The Faculty of Economics at UNAM honors educators for their commitment to critical thinking, social responsibility, and shaping future generations of economists.
The Faculty of Economics (FE) at UNAM recently held a ceremony to recognize the dedication and longevity of its teaching staff. Professor Emeritus Rolando Cordera Campos, a 55-year veteran of the faculty, emphasized the crucial role of economics in challenging irrationality and defending human freedom. He urged educators to remain committed to these values in an increasingly complex world.
Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas presided over the event, where 136 teachers were honored for their service ranging from 10 to 55 years. He echoed the call for critical engagement with contemporary issues, noting the rise of authoritarianism and the unfulfilled promises of neoliberal globalization.
“We also have the inevitable challenge of facing the costs of climate change and the effects that have on life on the planet; the social debts that we already drag,” said Rector lomelí vanegas, who himself was recognized for 30 years at the faculty. “All that stimulates us to deepen the teaching of the economy with a sense of social responsibility, of commitment in the search for solutions not only for the country, but also for the world.”
Professor Cordera Campos encouraged younger teachers to prioritize ancient rationality and critically examine established economic theories. He stressed the importance of intellectual rigor and a commitment to Enlightenment values in addressing global challenges like war, violence, and the shortcomings of capitalism.
