Rodica Stănoiu Death: Former Romanian Justice Minister Dies at 86

The former Minister of Justice in the Adrian Năstase government (2000-2004), Rodica Stănoiu, died on Wednesday, December 3, at the age of 86.

Rodica Stănoiu graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest in 1961. She followed postgraduate studies at the School of Criminology of the University of Montreal, at the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasbourg. In 1975, Rodica Stănoiu obtained the title of Doctor of Law at the “Andrei Rădulescu” Legal Research Institute of the Romanian Academy. In 1994, he completed a research internship at the Federal Justice Center in Washington DC.

From 1995 until 2005, Rodica Stănoiu worked as a university professor at Spiru Haret University, and from 1996 she held the same academic position at Dimitrie Cantemir University.

Starting with 1996, Rodica Stănoiu held the position of senator in the Romanian Parliament for three terms, and between 2000 and 2004, she was Minister of Justice.

Rodica Stănoiu was a member of the Social Democratic Party until September 2006. In January 2007, she joined the Conservative Party, led by Dan Voiculescu.

After the completion of the minister’s mandate, the National Council for the Study of Security Archives (CNSAS) revealed documents from which it emerged that the former minister collaborated with the Security, under the code name “Sanda”.

She was accused of being a political police officer from 1963 to 1987 and of signing information notes under the pseudonyms Sanda and Georgeta. Rodica Stănoiu sued CNSAS and definitively lost the lawsuit filed.

Rodica Stănoiu was married to Șerban Viorel Stănoiu (1940 – 2017), appointed by Ion Iliescu as a judge at the Constitutional Court, on behalf of the Presidency of Romania, with a mandate from 2001 to 2007.
