“Return too the Future” Concludes with Focus on Robotics and Innovation
The “Return to the Future: Retrospective of a Territory Through It’s ‘Genes'” series, an initiative celebrating Tuscan ingenuity, culminates this Saturday at the Muse room in Palazzo Centurione, Aulla. Organized by the Castelli Enhancement Institute, the event shines a spotlight on Professor Antonio bicchi,a leading figure in soft robotics. The series, which began in Pontremoli on Febuary 18th, aims to highlight individuals who embody the innovative spirit of Tuscany.
Antonio Bicchi: A Profile in Robotics Excellence
Professor Bicchi’s presentation will delve into his journey in soft robotics, emphasizing its applications in medicine and its potential to serve humanity. He is a Professor of Robotics at the Founder Unipi, Director of the Soft Robotics Laboratory at the IIT in Genoa, and an associated professor at Arizona State University. His work exemplifies the cutting edge of robotics research, focusing on creating robots that are adaptable, safe, and capable of interacting with humans in complex environments.
Soft robotics is conceived as a science at the service of people.

From Pontremoli to Global Recognition
Born in Pontremoli and a graduate of Liceo P. Rossi in Massa, Antonio Bicchi’s academic journey led him to the University of Pisa and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab) at MIT in Boston, where he earned his doctorate. He leads the robotics research group at the “Enrico Piaggio” research center and holds the first chair of robotics at the University of Pisa, an honour bestowed by the academic Senate. His extensive research has resulted in over 500 publications, and he has been awarded four prestigious grants from the European Research Council (ERC), including an Advanced Grant, two Proof of Concept Grants, and a Synergy Grant. These grants support groundbreaking research with the potential for significant societal impact.
mentorship and Collaboration
Professor bicchi’s influence extends beyond his own research. Two of his former PhD students, Elisa Donati, now a PhD at the Institute of Neurinformatics of the University of Zurich, and Denis Mattia De Micheli, a researcher at the University of Pisa and an entrepreneur, will join him in the presentation. They will discuss neuromorphic engineering and its applications in industry, showcasing the practical implications of Bicchi’s work and the next generation of innovators he has inspired.
Local Pride and Inspiration
Aulla Mayor Roberto Valettini expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event, emphasizing the importance of recognizing local talent. He stated that Professor Bicchi and others like him are often well-known in scientific circles but less recognized in their communities. The event serves as an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and inspire local students to pursue careers in science and technology.
I am very happy to host this original and significant initiative of enhancement of our brilliant contemporary and conterrane minds… I believe that the appointment is an extraordinary moment of encounter and knowledge that prides all of us and that can also represent a stimulus for our students.
