Waymo Robotaxis Now Available in Atlanta via Uber

Teh “Waymo on Uber” service expands to Atlanta, offering users another option for autonomous vehicle rides.

Robotaxis from Waymo can now be hailed in Atlanta through the Uber app.the two companies, already providing the “Waymo on Uber” service in Austin, announced on Tuesday that the commercial service will initially cover approximately 65 square miles within Atlanta.

This launch is expected to substantially benefit both companies. Uber, which has established partnerships with 18 autonomous vehicle companies, reports an annual run-rate of 1.5 million mobility and delivery AV trips on its network. waymo currently provides 250,000 paid robotaxi rides each week across Austin, Los angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

The addition of Atlanta is projected to increase these figures.

According to a Waymo spokesperson, the Atlanta fleet consists of “dozens” of vehicles, with plans for expansion. The combined fleet for Atlanta and Austin is expected to grow to the hundreds.

The “Waymo on Uber” service is a hybrid model where robotaxis and conventional, human-driven vehicles operate together. Uber users can adjust their app preferences to increase their chances of being matched with a Waymo vehicle.

This approach differs from Waymo’s operations in other cities, where riders use the Waymo One app to request robotaxis.

When an Uber user is matched with a Waymo robotaxi, they have the option to accept the ride or switch to a human-driven vehicle. Upon arrival, riders use the Uber app to unlock the vehicle, open the trunk, and begin their trip.

Robotaxi Ride Costs and Responsibilities

The companies have stated that robotaxi rides will be priced the same as UberX,Uber Comfort,or Uber Comfort Electric rides driven by human drivers.

“Waymo said it provides 250,000 paid robotaxi rides every week across Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco.”

The “Waymo on Uber” service divides the responsibilities of owning and operating driverless vehicles. Uber is responsible for charging, maintenance, and cleaning the autonomous vehicles, as well as managing access through its app. Waymo oversees the technology and autonomous operations, including roadside assistance and certain rider support functions.

In September of last year, Uber and Waymo announced plans to introduce a robotaxi service in Austin and atlanta in early 2025 as part of an expanded partnership. In March, the companies began offering the “Waymo on Uber” robotaxi service in Austin. Waymo reports having over 100 robotaxis in its commercial fleet in Austin.
