Renowned Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their Los Angeles mansion on Sunday.
Authorities are investigating the case as “an apparent homicide” after police and firefighters responded to the couple’s home on Sunday afternoon in Brentwood, an exclusive neighborhood of the city.
The bodies of both had multiple stab wounds, sources informed CBS News, the BBC’s American partner.
His daughter Romy, 28, was the one who found the bodies of the filmmaker and his wife in the mansion.
Hours later, officers arrested and charged Nick Reiner, another son of the couple.
The 32-year-old defendant is in custody on $4 million bail, according to records at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Detention Center.
Nick Reiner is the second of the three children of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, known for having suffered serious episodes of drug addiction since his adolescence.
The late Rob Reiner is known for directing iconic films such as The Princess Bride (“The Princess Bride”), This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me (“Count on Me”), When Harry Met Sally (“When Harry Met Sally”), Misery y A Few Good Men (“Some Good Men”).
His death was confirmed Sunday evening in a statement from a family spokesperson: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.”
“We are devastated by this sudden loss and ask for respect for our privacy at this extremely difficult time,” he added.
Police previously reported that a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene, although authorities did not immediately identify the victims or provide details about the circumstances of their deaths.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department told the BBC that they received a call around 3:38 p.m. local time requesting medical assistance at a home in the Brentwood neighborhood, an area where many celebrities live.
Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery-homicide division also responded to the scene and opened a homicide investigation.
At a news conference held Sunday night, police did not offer details about the deaths or what they found when they arrived at the home.
Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said both bodies remained inside the house more than six hours after the call to emergency services was received.
The authorities also did not specify what type of injuries the victims had or if they found any weapons.
Hamilton indicated that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for determining the cause of death.
“A genius with a big heart”
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement confirming the deaths of Reiner and his wife.
Newsom said he was “heartbroken” by the couple’s passing and described Reiner as “a big-hearted genius, responsible for many of the classic stories we love so much.”
Rob Reiner, son of the great comedian Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s and rose to fame playing Meathead in the groundbreaking television series All in the Family in the 70s.
The show was an American adaptation of the British comedy Till Death Us Do Part and earned him two Emmy Awards.

Reiner achieved even more success with the cult comedy This Is Spinal Tap (1984), a mockumentary that he directed and in which he also played the on-screen director, Marty DiBergi.
That was the beginning of a series of Hollywood film classics directed by Reiner, including “Stand by Me” (1986), “The Princess Bride” (1987), “When Harry Met Sally” (1989), Misery (1990) and “A Matter of Honor” or “A Few Good Men” (1992), the latter earned him an Oscar nomination for best film.

He met again with the cast of Spinal Tap for the long-awaited sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continuesreleased in September.
As an actor, he also appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) and Bullets over Broadway (“Bullets Over Broadway”) as well as in television series such as New Girl y The Bear.
Those paying tribute also included former US President Barack Obama, who said he and his wife Michelle were heartbroken by the couple’s death.
“Rob’s achievements in film and television left us with some of our most beloved stories on screen. But behind every story he produced was a deep faith in the goodness of people and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
“Together with his wife, they lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they upheld and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Many other tributes came from the world of film and television. Eric Idle, star of Monty Pythondescribed Reiner as “a lovely man.”
For his part, actor John Cusack called him “a great man,” while Elijah Wood said he was “horrified” by the couple’s death.
James Woods, nominated for an Oscar for his role in the drama Ghosts from the Past (“Ghosts of the Past”, 1996), declared himself “desolate by this terrible event.”
Comedian and director Ben Stiller described it as “a huge loss.”
“Spinal Tap is one of the best comedies ever made, and the list goes on. “He was a kind, caring person and very, very funny.”
Josh Gad, actor de Frozendefined him as “one of the greatest directors of our time”:
“He was just a beautiful person. Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were two of the kindest and most generous souls one could imagine. He cared deeply about those who had no voice. This loss is devastating. I can’t express how much it hurts. We love you, Rob and Michele. Thank you for everything you gave us.”
Reiner also co-founded the successful production company Castle Rock Entertainment.
He was married to the actress Laverne & ShirleyPenny Marshall, between 1971 and 1981, and is the adoptive father of Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.
In 1989 he married Michele Reiner, actress, photographer and producer, with whom he had three children. Michele was the owner of the photography agency and production company Reiner Light.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the event “a devastating loss for our city and our country” and paid tribute to the couple’s work in child development and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.
“Rob Reiner’s contributions resonate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and his advocacy for social and economic justice.”
Reiner was also an activist committed to social and political causes, as well as Democratic Party candidates.
