Netflix continues to be a prolific producer of thrillers throughout the year, and 2024 was no exception. Standouts like “Rebel Ridge,” “Carry-On,” and “It’s What’s Inside” made notable impressions. Looking ahead to 2025, another ambitious thriller is set to hit the platform: “RIP.”
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who won an Oscar for co-writing “Good Will Hunting,” are uniting once again for this crime thriller. Their collection of past collaborations, including “Good Will Hunting,” “Dogma,” and more recently, “Air,” have demonstrated their talent and compatibility. This upcoming project from writer-director Joe Carnahan has already piqued my interest.
Inspired by a real-life account shared by one of Carnahan’s friends, “RIP” follows a group of Miami cops who discover a substantial sum of money hidden in an abandoned building. As word spreads about the bounty, the team faces external threats that challenge the trust within the force.
The plot suggests that Netflix could deliver another gripping crime thriller if executed well. With a release date set for fall 2025, I am eagerly awaiting its premiere on the streaming service.
To date, Netflix has released a first-look image featuring Damon and Affleck in a rundown room, likely the stash house, with Damon in full police gear. This image hints at his role as one of the police officers. Still, no official trailer has been unveiled. More details were shared during Netflix’s 2025 slate announcement, hinting at the high anticipation surrounding this film.
What Else Do We Know About ‘RIP’?
Alongside the first-look image, Netflix Tudum has provided an official logline for the film: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”
Joe Carnahan elaborated on the inspiration for the film: “RIP came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department. It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like Serpico and Prince of the City and more recently, Michael Mann’s Heat.”
The synopsis places “RIP” in the vein of other gritty thrillers like “Training Day,” “Triple 9,” and “Den of Thieves.” The film promises to explore the tensions among officers who might compromise their integrity in pursuit of personal gain.
“RIP” sounds like a high-stakes crime thriller in the vein of other gritty thrillers like “Training Day,” “Triple 9,” and “Den of Thieves.”
The cast of “RIP” includes a mix of recognizable and up-and-coming talent. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck headline the ensemble, alongside Steven Yeun (known from “The Walking Dead” and Netflix’s “Beef”), Catalina Sandino Moreno, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler.
Despite the excitement, the exact release date remains uncertain. Netflix has only provided a rough timeline of fall 2025, suggesting an appearance between late September and December. Hopefully, a teaser trailer will be unveiled soon to provide more details and potentially an exact release date.
Regardless, “RIP” is already making its way to the top of my watchlist. The mix of talented actors and a compelling plot promises a thrilling experience when it lands on Netflix later this year.
