Addressing the Growing Need for Child Mental Health Support

Recognizing the increasing importance of mental well-being in young children, the Deliberative Council of La Rioja’s capital is actively considering a pioneering initiative focused on bolstering child mental health at the municipal level. this program, aptly named A Program for Emotional well-being, originated from the Youth Municipal Parliament, highlighting the crucial role of youth voices in shaping community initiatives. The core objective is to provide comprehensive emotional support to children attending local schools and kindergartens.

The urgency of such programs is underscored by recent statistics. According to a 2024 report by the world Health Organization, mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10-19 years.failure to address these issues early can have significant long-term consequences, impacting educational attainment, social relationships, and overall quality of life.

Collaborative Refinement of the “Emotional Well-being” Program

During its review by the health commission, the proposed program benefited from invaluable insights provided by specialized technical teams dedicated to child development. Key contributors included Eliana López, Director of Coordination, Link and Institutional Affairs of the Council, María Cecilia Herrera from the Juan Manuel Fangio municipal school, and Jessica Mercado representing the Dr. santos Danón Maternal Garden. Their expertise ensured the program is grounded in best practices and tailored to the specific needs of the community.

They are serious psychological teams that came to enrich the project, which will continue to be treated in commission as we see it viable to be implemented in the municipality.

The program outlines specific, actionable strategies designed to foster a supportive environment for children’s emotional development. these include:

  • Prevention Workshops: Proactive sessions aimed at equipping children with coping mechanisms and resilience-building skills.
  • Teacher Training: Empowering educators with the knowledge and tools to identify and support students experiencing emotional difficulties.
  • Emotional Education Promotion: Integrating emotional literacy into the curriculum to help children understand and manage their feelings.
  • Self-Esteem Enhancement: Activities designed to build confidence and a positive self-image in young learners.
  • Assertive Interaction Skills: Teaching children how to express their needs and opinions respectfully and effectively.

These combined efforts aim to create a holistic approach to nurturing the integral well-being of children in La Rioja.

Empowering Youth Through Political Engagement: the Provincial Youth Parliament

La Rioja is committed to fostering civic engagement among its youth. The launch of the provincial youth parliament underscores this commitment, providing a platform for students to actively participate in discussions on issues that directly impact their lives. This initiative guarantees the social right to education through student participation in institutional spaces.

The parliament brings together young people from all 18 departments of the province, ensuring diverse perspectives are represented in the decision-making process.
