Columbia staff members were notified of Hill’s passing at an in-person meeting following an early dismissal on Friday.

East Greenbush Central School District Superintendent Kurtis Kotes described Hill say Rich Hill as “a genuinely beloved teacher and colleague who dedicated many years of his life to serving the children of our school community. His commitment to his students and his positive impact on Columbia High School were immense, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him – students, staff, and families alike.”

The district is providing support services for students and staff. The Questar III BOCES Crisis Support Team was mobilized, in conjunction with district mental health staff were on site for the remainder of the regular school day to provide counseling and resources to anyone in need.

Information about ongoing support services and resources will be provided to all families as soon as it is available. District leaders encourage families to speak with children and let them know that school counselors and support staff are ready to help them process their feelings.
