Now we have our first look at Ayano’s Pocket Green, a vertical “Game Boy style” handheld device capable of emulating older consoles from the Dreamcast, GameCube and PS2 era. It’s great to be alive.
But first the hardware, which feels pretty solid. As electronics enthusiasts know, the Pocket Vert isn’t Ayaneo’s first handheld computer in Game Boy form. The manufacturer released the portable DMG Pocket last year. Despite its functionality, the Pocket DMG is quite expensive, starting at $450. Ayaneo has yet to announce official global pricing for the Pocket Vert, but with a starting price of 1,699 yuan (approximately $241), the portable device is expected to cost around $250. This makes the Pocket Vert slightly more expensive than the $220 Pocket Analog.
Speaking of analog Pocket, Pocket Vert has many similarities. It has the same-looking 3.5-inch LTPS LCD touchscreen with the same resolution of 1,600 x 1,400 and 615 pixels per inch (ppi). The Pocket Vert has the same 60Hz refresh rate and 450 nits brightness.
The Pocket Vert has some key differences compared to the Pocket DMG and Analogue Pocket. It’s still an Android 14 phone, so you’ll be running an emulator to play old games. Unlike the Analogue Pocket, the Pocket Vert does not have a cartridge slot for Game Boy games. The Pocket Vert is also made from a higher quality material – metal instead of the plastic found on the Pocket DMG and Analogue Pocket.
Overall first impressions from YouTube user ETA Prime In the video above, you can see that the Pocket Vert is basically a cross between the Pocket DMG and the Analogue Pocket. All buttons have a satisfying tactile feel. The specs — a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 6,000 mAh battery — appear to be enough for emulation. Even the D-pad and the “Magic Touch” touchpad beneath the front buttons, which let you control games that require a joystick or dual joysticks, are practical enough for 3D gaming. As the cherry on top, the Pocket Vert has a fingerprint sensor built into its power button.
When it comes to game emulation, the Pocket Vert seems to handle older consoles like the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube, and Sony PlayStation 2 quite well. ETA Prime says that using the default AYASpace launcher, it is able to achieve consistent 60fps frame rates in GameCube games, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Primeand Resident Evil 4 3 times the original resolution. PS2 games too Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Eyeand Ratchet and Clank: Commando。 Dreamcast games are undemanding but can run at very playable frame rates.
As a Game Boy user, the Pocket Vert held an attraction for me that horizontally shaped handheld devices did not. There’s no word yet on when Ayaneo will launch the Pocket Vert (sometime in early 2026), but it’s one of the devices I’m most looking forward to. That’s assuming the current shortage of RAM and flash storage doesn’t completely derail launch plans.
