The driver license changed in 2025: from now on, to obtain, renew or recategorize the document you must present a medical certificate of physical, mental and motor coordination fitness issued exclusively by a Driver Recognition Center (CRC).

This Colombian certificate must be duly registered In the RUNT, the system integrates a variety of private and government entities, and provides key information to governments, transit organizations and insurers, among other authorities in Colombia.

If a driver or a person who wants to obtain a driver’s license does not have this certificate will not be able to complete the procedure and, therefore, will not be authorized to drive in Colombian territory. Furthermore, medical examinations developed by an EPS are not accepted.

Goodbye to the driver’s license: the paper that you must present

The main objective of the presentation of the medical certificate is reinforce the road safety throughout the country and ensure that all drivers have been tested from every possible aspect. In this way, the aim is to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

The physical exams by which you will obtain your medical certificate They include tests of visual acuity, hearing, motor coordination, psychological evaluation and a general medical examination. They last approximately one hour and have a total cost that varies between 170,000 and 210,000 pesos.

Driver’s license: why can the procedure be blocked?

The CRCs are the organizations in charge of registering your certificate in a timely manner and in the Control and Surveillance System (SICOV) of the Ministry of Transportation. These records will then be available in the official RUNT system.

If this registration is not carried out correctly, both from the driver’s side and from the competent authorities, the transit platform could block the process of your license and, in this way, the procedure would be temporarily blocked until the duly uploaded certificate is presented.

Those who do not have a medical certificate issued by an accredited CRC and reported in the system simply will not be able to process their license. That is why the authorities recommend scheduling the appointment at an authorized CRC, accrediting the document in the RUNT and then continuing with the process.
