Relationship Dependence: Finding Independence

by Archynetys Entertainment Desk

US singer Nicole Scherzinger says she believes her early career may have damaged her relationship life. “When you’re so young, you don’t notice it at the moment, but this time of growing up is taken away from you,” the 47-year-old told the US magazine “Variety”. Scherzinger became world famous in her mid-20s as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls.

Scherzinger describes her time in the girl group as extremely controlled. She had little creative freedom and often felt like a “product” being marketed. Although she was known as the frontwoman of the Pussycat Dolls, she had little say and constantly had to prove herself.

“I wonder that about Britney Spears,” Scherzinger further mused. The “Baby One More Time” singer’s time to grow up was stolen. Maybe part of you “withers away,” said Scherzinger. Referring to Spears, she continued: “She’s definitely gotten into very codependent, needy relationships – and so have I.” She also once experienced feelings of despair in her relationships.

The years in the spotlight left their mark, describes Scherzinger in the interview with “Variety”. She speaks of a feeling of alienation and of having lost herself. The constant criticism and pressure to be perfect led to self-doubt and a disturbed self-image.

Liberating work in the theater

Today she finds her work in the theater liberating. She has learned to accept her past and find her voice again – this time in her own way. The stage gives her the opportunity to express herself authentically and not just be a “brand”.

On-off relationship with Lewis Hamilton

Scherzinger previously had an on-off relationship with Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton. Afterwards she dated the Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov for some time.

For several years she has been in a relationship with former rugby player Thom Evans, to whom she has also been engaged for two years. Last June, she gushed about Evans, who was “such a constant and a rock” in her life.
