Red Sox Shore Up Catcher Depth with Narvaez Acquisition
The Boston Red Sox made a move to bolster their catching depth on Wednesday, acquiring 26-year-old Carlos Narvaez from the New York Yankees in exchange for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. This trade comes on the heels of the Red Sox trading top catching prospect Kyle Teel to the White Sox for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet earlier in the day.
Narvaez Brings Experience Despite Limited MLB Exposure
While Narvaez has only appeared in six Major League games, all with the Yankees last season, he boasts a solid minor league track record.
He slashed .254/.370/.412 with an impressive .782 OPS across 96 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2024. Defensively, Narvaez has proven capable, throwing out 30% of base stealers throughout his eight-year minor league career. This experience behind the plate makes him a valuable addition as a backup to Connor Wong.
Red Sox Part with Promising Prospect
In parting with Rodriguez-Cruz, the Red Sox lose a potential piece of their future pitching staff. The 21-year-old righty displayed a 2.91 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 21 outings (20 starts) at Low-A Salem and High-A Greenville in 2024. His fastball reaching 95-98 mph is a promising sign for his development, along with his diverse arsenal of pitches including a curveball, slider, splitter, and sweeper added in 2024.
What’s Next for the Red Sox?
This trade highlights the Red Sox’s commitment to building a strong and competitive team. Acquiring proven depth behind the plate while retaining valuable young pitching talent positions them well for the future.
